How to Improve Visibility in AI Search Engines
Ask ChatGPT for the best accountant in your city and it will name three or four firms. Not ten blue links, not a page of ads: a short list, delivered with confidence. If you are not on that list, the buyer never hears your name. This guide explains how AI search engines choose which businesses to name, and the eight things that most improve your odds of being one of them.
The short answer
- AI engines search the web, read a handful of sources, and name the businesses those sources agree on.
- To be named, you need to be reachable, clearly described on your own site, and mentioned on the sites the engines trust.
- Measure how often you are named across many questions, not where you rank in one answer. Answers change between runs.
What AI search visibility means
AI search visibility is how often AI tools (ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity) name or cite your business when someone asks a question you should be the answer to. "Who does commercial roof repair near me?" "What is the best CRM for a ten person team?" "Which Honolulu caterers handle weddings?"
It behaves differently from a Google ranking. A results page shows ten businesses in a fairly stable order. An AI answer names a few, and the names and their order shift every time the question is asked. So the useful measure is presence: out of all the answers to all the questions that matter to you, how many include you? That number holds steady between runs, and it is the one worth improving.

How AI engines decide who to name
When the question is about buying something, most AI tools do not answer from memory alone. They search first. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may issue "multiple related searches across subtopics and data sources" to build a response, and that a page has to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search before it can be used as a supporting link. ChatGPT's search feature draws on third-party search providers and on its own crawler, OAI-SearchBot. Gemini, Claude and Perplexity search the web in much the same way.
- The questionA buyer asks in plain language, often with a location or budget.
- The searchThe engine runs its own web searches, usually several, behind the scenes.
- The sourcesIt reads a handful of pages: lists, reviews, directories, news, your site.
- The answerIt names the businesses those sources agree on, and cites some of them.
That last step is the one most businesses miss. The engine is not judging your business directly. It is summarizing what the web says about your category. If the pages it reads all mention the same three competitors, those three become the answer.
Eight ways to improve your brand's visibility in AI search
These are the strategies we use on client sites and on our own properties, in the order we usually tackle them. The first three are fixes you control today. The rest compound over months.
Let the engines in
AI engines cannot recommend a page they cannot fetch. Check that your robots.txt does not block the AI crawlers (OAI-SearchBot, ClaudeBot, PerplexityBot and friends). OpenAI says sites that block OAI-SearchBot will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers. Then confirm your key pages are indexed in Google Search Console, and verify the site in Bing Webmaster Tools too, since Bing powers Microsoft Copilot. Some website platforms now ship a one-click "block AI crawlers" switch; make sure nobody flipped it.
Do this: Open yoursite.com/robots.txt and search for Disallow lines under any AI crawler name.
Answer the buying questions on your own pages
Engines lift answers from pages that state them plainly. Write a page (or a section) for each question a buyer actually asks: what you do, who it is for, where you work, what it costs, how long it takes. Lead with the direct answer in the first sentence, then the detail. Vague positioning copy gives an engine nothing to quote.
Do this: List the ten questions you hear on sales calls. Every one should have a clear answer somewhere on your site.
Make your facts match everywhere
Engines cross-check. When your name, address, services, hours and service area differ between your site, your Google Business Profile and the directories in your category, the engine has less reason to trust any of them.
Do this: Search your business name and fix the first ten listings that disagree with your site.
Get mentioned on the sites engines cite
Most AI answers are built from a short list of sources: industry roundups, local news, review sites, directories, and community threads. If those pages name your competitors and not you, the answer will too. Find out which sources the engines cite in your category, then earn a place on them through real pitching, listings and partnerships.
Do this: Ask ChatGPT a buying question in your category and click every source it cites. That is your outreach list.
Build reviews where buyers and engines look
Reviews are one of the few signals that are both specific and independent. Fresh, detailed reviews on your Google Business Profile and on the review sites in your industry give engines concrete language about what you do well.
Do this: Ask your last ten happy customers for a review that mentions the service they bought.
Use structured data to remove doubt
Schema markup (Organization or LocalBusiness, Service, FAQPage, Product) tells a machine exactly what your page is about. Google says you do not need special markup or AI text files to appear in AI Overviews, so treat schema as clarity, not a switch. It still helps every engine read your facts correctly.
Do this: Run your homepage through Google's Rich Results Test and fix any errors it reports.
Publish honest comparisons
Buyers ask AI to compare options: "best X in Seattle", "X vs Y", "is X worth it". Pages that compare fairly, including where a competitor is the better fit, are exactly what engines quote. A page that only praises you rarely gets used.
Do this: Write one comparison page for the choice your buyers struggle with most.
Measure, fix, and measure again
AI answers change between runs, so one screenshot proves nothing. Track how often you are named across many questions and engines, see which sources the engines lean on, fix what is missing, then check again in a few months.
Do this: Pick twenty buying questions and record who gets named today. That is your baseline.
What does not work (yet)
Save your time on these
- Relying on an llms.txt file. It is cheap to publish, but no major AI provider has confirmed it reads the file when answering. It will not move your visibility by itself.
- Mass producing AI written pages. Thin pages that say what everyone else says give an engine no reason to cite you over the sources it already trusts.
- Chasing your position in one answer. Ask the same question twice and the order changes. Track presence across many questions instead.
- Treating AI as separate from SEO. Most engines search the web before they answer. A site that is invisible in search is usually invisible in AI too.
AI search visibility tools compared
A tracking tool asks AI engines a set of questions (vendors call them prompts) on a schedule and records whether you were named, who was named instead, and which pages were cited. The table shows entry prices from each vendor's own pricing page.
| Tool | Starts at | AI engines tracked | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Otterly.AI | $29/mo (15 prompts) | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Perplexity, Copilot; Gemini, Claude and AI Mode as add-ons | Cheapest way to start tracking. Multi-client dashboards on higher plans. |
| LLMrefs | $79/mo (up to 500 prompts) | ChatGPT, AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Meta AI | Many prompts for the price. Client dashboards included. |
| Peec AI | $95/mo (50 prompts, 3 engines) | ChatGPT, AI Mode, AI Overviews, Copilot, Perplexity, Gemini | Separate agency plans from $245/mo with white-label reporting. |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | $99/mo (25 prompts) | ChatGPT and Google AI Mode; more engines in Semrush One plans | Easy add if you already use Semrush for SEO. No free trial on the toolkit. |
| Rankscale | $99/mo (Pro) | ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, DeepSeek, Mistral | White-label options from the $385/mo Growth tier. |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | $199/mo add-on | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot | Sits on top of an Ahrefs plan; strongest if you already live in Ahrefs. |
| Scrunch | $300/mo ($250 billed yearly) | ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, AI Overviews and AI Mode, Meta AI | Agency program with client guest access. |
| Profound | Custom pricing | Up to nine engines on enterprise plans | Built for larger brands. Free seven day trial; no public self-serve price. |
List prices, monthly unless noted, checked on each vendor's pricing page on October 6, 2026. These tools reprice often, so confirm before you buy.
Two things to know before you subscribe. First, a tool measures; it does not fix anything. If nobody on your team will act on what it reports, a cheaper one-time check tells you the same thing. Second, compare how each tool counts. Fifteen prompts on one engine and five hundred prompts across eight engines are not the same product, even when the dashboards look alike.
Tools, audits or an agency: what AI visibility costs
There are three common ways to pay for AI search visibility. They are not mutually exclusive: plenty of businesses start with an audit, fix the obvious gaps themselves, and add a tool or an agency later.
| Tracking tool | One-time audit | Agency retainer | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it costs | About $29 to $300 a month for small business plans; enterprise plans are custom | Our AI Visibility Audit is $500 when booked by December 31 (regularly $1,000). Published audits elsewhere start around $1,300 | Published AI SEO and GEO retainers we found start around $3,000 a month, and some require a six month minimum |
| What you get | A dashboard of mentions and citations over time | Who the engines name for your buying questions, which sources they cite, and a prioritized list of fixes | Someone doing the fixes: content, technical work, outreach and reporting |
| Who does the work | You | You or your team, with a clear list | The agency |
| Best for | Teams with time to act on the data every week | Finding out where you stand before you spend more | Businesses where AI answers already drive real revenue |
Our own pricing is public: one audit, or an audit plus quarterly or monthly re-checks that show what moved. See the plans. If you are comparing agencies, ask three questions: what exactly they measure, how many times they ask each question, and whether you keep the raw answers. Anyone who quotes you a single "AI rank" is reporting a number the engines do not hold still.
For agencies: white-label AI visibility reporting
If you run an agency, your clients are already asking whether ChatGPT recommends them. You have two ways to answer: run a tool under your own brand, or resell a finished audit from a specialist under your brand.
White-label tools. AgencyAnalytics includes white-label dashboards (your logo, your domain) at about $20 per client per month and offers an AI visibility tracker as a beta add-on. Among the AI visibility tools, Peec AI sells agency plans with white-label reporting and client logins from $245 a month, Rankscale offers white-label options from its $385 Growth tier, and Scrunch runs an agency program with client guest access.
What a good AI visibility report shows, whoever builds it:
- Presence across repeated runs (named in 14 of 30 answers), not a single position.
- Every engine reported separately, because ChatGPT and Google often disagree.
- The sources each engine cited, so the client knows where to earn mentions.
- The competitors named instead, on the same questions.
- The raw answers, so anyone can check the findings.
White-label AI Visibility Audits for partner agencies
Surf Rider Media offers the AI Visibility Audit white-label to partner agencies. We run the same method on your clients (thirty buying questions across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google AI Overviews, competitors, cited sources and site fixes, every finding reviewed by our team) and deliver it under your brand, so you can resell a finished audit instead of learning another tool.
Tell us about your agency and your clients and we will send partner pricing.
Where to start this week
- Today: check your robots.txt and your website platform's AI crawler setting. Unblock anything that should not be blocked.
- This week: ask ChatGPT, Gemini and Google five questions your buyers ask. Write down who gets named and which sources get cited.

Common questions
What is AI search visibility?
AI search visibility is how often AI tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude and Google's AI Overviews name or cite your business when people ask questions you should be the answer to. It is best measured as presence, meaning how many answers include you out of how many were asked, because the order of names in an AI answer changes from run to run.
How do I improve my brand's visibility in AI search engines?
Make sure AI crawlers and search indexes can reach your site, answer buying questions plainly on your own pages, keep your business facts consistent across the web, earn mentions on the sources engines cite in your category, build reviews, add structured data, publish honest comparisons, and measure presence over time so you can see what moved.
Is AI search optimization different from SEO?
It overlaps heavily. Most AI engines search the web before they answer, so pages that are indexed, clear and well linked still win. The difference is emphasis: AI answers lean harder on third-party mentions, consistent facts and direct answers, and they name only a few businesses, so being on the sources they cite matters more than ranking tenth.
How long does it take to improve AI visibility?
Technical fixes such as unblocking crawlers can show up within weeks, once the engines recrawl your site. Earning mentions on the sources engines trust takes months, much like link building. Plan to re-measure quarterly rather than weekly.
Does an llms.txt file help?
Not much today. No major AI provider has confirmed that it reads llms.txt when answering questions, and Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in AI Overviews. It is cheap to publish, but it will not move your visibility on its own. Crawl access, clear pages and third-party mentions do.
How much do AI search visibility tools cost?
Self-serve AI visibility tools started at $29 a month in October 2026 for a small number of tracked questions, and most small business plans ran $79 to $300 a month. Enterprise tools such as Profound quote custom prices. What you pay for is mostly the number of questions (prompts) tracked and the number of AI engines covered.
Can agencies white-label AI visibility reports?
Yes. Agency reporting platforms such as AgencyAnalytics offer branded client dashboards with an AI visibility add-on, and several AI visibility tools sell agency plans with white-label reporting or client logins, including Peec AI and Rankscale. Agencies that would rather resell a finished audit can use Surf Rider Media's white-label AI Visibility Audit. Whichever you choose, check that the report shows presence across repeated runs and the sources the engines cite, not a single ranking.
