How to Improve AI Search Visibility for Enterprise Software (AEO for SaaS)

To improve AI search visibility for enterprise software, let the AI search crawlers read your site, publish pages that answer shortlist questions (comparisons, alternatives, pricing, integrations), and earn mentions on the sources engines cite for your category. That is AEO for SaaS in one sentence. Software buyers now ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Perplexity for a shortlist before they book a demo.

The short answer

  • AI engines build software shortlists by searching the web and summarizing what the pages they find agree on.
  • Your site needs pages that answer shortlist questions directly, and the AI search crawlers (not only Googlebot) must be allowed in.
  • Measure how often you are named across twenty or more buyer questions, asked more than once, on several engines.

How AI engines build a software shortlist

A buyer asks ChatGPT for "the best CRM for a 200 person sales team that uses Outlook". The engine searches, reads a handful of pages, and names the products those pages agree on. Google says AI Overviews and AI Mode may use a "query fan-out" technique, running several related searches before answering. OpenAI, Anthropic and Perplexity each document a search crawler of their own.

For a software question, the candidate pages are comparison and "best of" articles, review sites, vendor docs and pricing pages, and community threads. So AI search optimization for SaaS differs from local business AEO: no map pack, no Business Profile. The general mechanics are in how to improve your visibility in AI search engines; this is the software version.

Run your own shortlist test

Write twenty buyer questions and ask them on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity and Google, from three angles:

AngleExample questionWhat it shows
Use caseBest project tracking software for a construction firmWhether you are known for the jobs you sell into
RoleWhat reporting tool should a nonprofit finance director use?Whether engines connect you to the buyer
CompetitorAlternatives to Tool A for a 50 person teamWhether you appear when a buyer is leaving someone else

Ask each question more than once, since answers shift between runs. Record who is named and which sources are cited.

Where do the questions come from? Paid search is the best source we know. We have run Google Ads for a B2B software company and for a nonprofit software company (an all-in-one platform for nonprofits covering CRM, fund accounting and fundraising). That work taught us that software buyers search in comparisons and alternatives: product against product, and "something like X, but for us". The Google Ads search terms report lists the actual searches that triggered your ads. Those are the questions buyers now ask AI engines, only longer.

AEO for SaaS: the pages a shortlist needs

SaaS AEO starts on your own site. An engine can only quote what exists, so each shortlist question needs a page that answers it in the first sentence. These come first:

Comparison pages

One page per competitor you lose deals to: who each product suits, where yours wins, where theirs does. Buyers ask "X vs Y" directly, and a fair comparison gives the engine an answer to lift.

Do this: Write the comparison for the competitor named most on your sales calls.

Alternatives pages

"Alternatives to Tool A" is a shortlist question. A page that lists the real options, yours included, with who each fits, is one an engine can use.

Do this: Search your top three "alternatives to" questions and see who answers them.

A pricing page with numbers

If your pricing page says only "contact sales", the engine writes the price answer from someone else's guess. Publish list prices, or at least how pricing works: per seat, usage, minimums.

Do this: Write down the one question your pricing page leaves open.

Integration, use case and role pages

"Does it work with Salesforce?" and "best tool for a nonprofit finance team" are buying questions. A page per integration and per core use case matches them far better than a homepage does.

Do this: Give a page each to your top five integrations and to your best customers' use case.

Public docs and a security page

Enterprise buyers ask about SSO, data residency and certifications. Docs and a security page that crawlers can read answer them; the same content behind a login answers nothing.

Do this: Check whether your docs load without signing in.

GEO for B2B: the sources behind the answer

Generative engine optimization in B2B leans on other people's pages. When an engine names three tools, it is usually repeating its sources. Sort the sources from your test: review and comparison sites, roundups and analyst lists, community discussions, partner marketplaces, vendor pages. If the same few keep appearing and name competitors but not you, that is your outreach plan: complete and refresh your review profiles, ask happy customers for reviews where buyers read them, and pitch the roundup authors something new.

Skip generic lists of "sites AI engines love". Cited sources vary by category and change over time.

Crawlers, rendering, schema and llms.txt

Each vendor separates its search crawler from its training crawler:

robots.txt nameVendorWhat the vendor says it does
OAI-SearchBotOpenAISurfaces sites in ChatGPT search. Blocked sites "will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers".
GPTBotOpenAICollects content that may train OpenAI's models.
Claude-SearchBotAnthropicImproves Claude's search results. Blocking it may reduce your visibility in them.
ClaudeBotAnthropicCollects content that may be used in model training.
Google-ExtendedGoogleA token, not a crawler: controls Gemini training and grounding. Does not affect Search inclusion or ranking.
PerplexityBotPerplexitySurfaces and links sites in Perplexity search. Not used for model training.

From each vendor's crawler documentation, checked October 19, 2026.

Allow the search crawlers and Googlebot; training crawlers are a separate business decision. OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to reach its search systems. Check your firewall or bot protection too, since it can block a crawler robots.txt allows.

Rendering. Google renders JavaScript, but its own guide says server-side or pre-rendering "is still a great idea" because "not all bots can run JavaScript". Put prices, plans and integration lists in the HTML.

Structured data. Google documents SoftwareApplication markup (name, price, and a rating or review are required) and asks that structured data match the visible text.

llms.txt. None of the four vendors' crawler documentation says its crawlers read llms.txt, and Google says you do not need AI text files to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. OpenAI and Perplexity link one from their own developer docs. It is cheap to add for docs; do not expect it to change who gets named.

B2B SaaS SEO and AEO: where they overlap

Most of this is B2B SaaS SEO done well. Google says a page must be indexed and eligible to show with a snippet to be a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode (more in how to improve your visibility in Google AI Overviews). The difference is emphasis. AI answers name a few products and lean on third-party agreement, so comparison pages and review profiles count for more than ranking eighth for a head term. That is why we run Google Ads, SEO and AEO as one plan: Bespoke Digital Strategy.

Measuring it

Keep your twenty to thirty questions fixed. Track presence (named in how many answers out of how many asked) per engine, the competitors named instead, and the sources cited. A tool can automate it (see AI visibility tools compared), or our AI Visibility Audit runs thirty buying questions three times each on ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Google AI Overviews, with monthly or quarterly re-checks showing which questions you gained or lost.

Where to start this week

  • Today: confirm robots.txt does not block OAI-SearchBot, Claude-SearchBot, PerplexityBot or Googlebot.
  • This week: ask twenty buyer questions on four engines and record who is named and which sources are cited.
  • This month: publish the comparison or pricing page your test showed was missing.

Common questions

What is AEO for SaaS?

AEO for SaaS (answer engine optimization for software companies) is the work of getting your product named when buyers ask ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity or Google's AI Overviews for software recommendations: shortlist pages on your own site, mentions on the sources engines cite, crawler access, and measuring how often you are named.

How do you rank in AI search for software?

There is no fixed rank. Names and their order change between runs of the same question, so the goal is presence: being named in more answers across your buyers' questions. Let the search crawlers in, publish comparison, pricing and integration pages, and earn mentions on the sources the engines cite.

Is B2B SaaS SEO still worth doing if buyers ask AI?

Yes. Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode use pages that are indexed and eligible for Search, and other engines search the web before they answer. SEO is the base; AEO adds the comparison pages, third-party mentions and measurement.

Should we block GPTBot or ClaudeBot?

That is a training decision, separate from search. OpenAI and Anthropic document GPTBot and ClaudeBot as training crawlers and run separate search crawlers (OAI-SearchBot and Claude-SearchBot). You can block training and still allow search. Blocking the search crawlers is what costs you visibility.

Do we need a GEO agency for SaaS, or can we do this in house?

Many software teams can run the test and fix their own pages. An agency earns its fee when nobody owns the work across content, technical fixes and paid search, or when you want the same measurement every month.
